Referesher Course on Recent Developments in Geo-hazard Disaster Management; Focusing on Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction in Mountainous Regions: 10-22 August 2008, Pakistan
Publish Date : Monday, 2008-May-19 Author :
International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation The Netherlands
The proposed course focuses on earthquake vulnerability reduction and the role of geo-information and earth sciences within this process. The first week of the course will be devoted to creating an understanding of the geologic processes underlying earthquakes, the way in which earth observation and seismological data can be used to monitor these processes and guide local site investigations using geophysical tools and geo-engineering practices.
The course will start with a participants workshop. This will give an overview of the expertise and interests of all participants and will facilitate discussions for the remainder of the course. It is followed by an overview of earthquake risk management and the role of geo-information and earth observation (e.g. satellite missions that can be used to study crustal dynamics at a regional scale such as multi-spectral data for land use/cover mapping and updating, interferometric SAR systems for stress/strain estimation). The earth science component starts by describing the underlying earth science processes (e.g., the geodynamics and tectonics of earthquake prone regions) and some of the seismological principles and sources of information we can deploy for this. A significant part of this course component is devoted to interferometric SAR. SAR is rapidly becoming more widely applicable and available. We will study ground movement related to earthquakes in a worked out example. This is followed by an overview of regional earthquake hazard assessment methods, and methods for seismic macro-zonation. As a component of that we look at site investigations in cities that can assist in soil and rock characterization in relation to earthquake acceleration. This implies a focus on field-based geophysical and geo-engineering methods.
Target group
Specifically the course is intended for the following persons:
• NFP alumni from Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Bangladesh, Tadzikistan, Kyrgyzstan who studied in the fields Geoinformatics, Geo-information Management, Urban Planning and Land Administration, Earth Resources and Environmental Geosciences, and Applied Earth Sciences • Their colleagues from government organizations and NGO’s responsible for disaster management related to earthquake hazards in the Himalayan region.

Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) On-line Course
Submit Date : Wednesday, 2008-Mar-26 Author :
Asian Disaster Preparedness Center Thailand
INTRODUCTION
Description
ADPC has been organizing CBDRR Regional Training program annually. This year, ADPC through its project called: PDRSEA (Partnership for Disaster Reduction – South East Asia) phase 4 is trying to launch an online course on CBDRR. This initiative was raised due to the fact that Disaster Management Practitioners most of the time is busy with task at the field.
Having the course online will help the practitioners to keep working on their duty place, and at the same time learning and sharing the experience of CBDRR.
Objective
The objective of this course is to build up capacity of DM practitioners, and also to share and learn their experiences in CBDRR.
In addition to that, by the end of the course, the participants will be expected to be able to:
- Examine various models of Disaster Risk Management
- Design and conduct CBDRR Assessment
- Identify measures for hazard & vulnerability reduction & community capacity building
Agenda
This CBDRR online course is a four-module course.
The pilot test which will present the first module (Context of CBDRR) will take place on 9th April 2008. The course duration is 18 days, in total.
The next module will follow, and further announcement will be sent to you.
Language: English
Target Audience
Disaster management practitioners with active role in rolling out the online disaster risk management capacity building program.
Participants are expected from Indonesia, Philippines, Viet Nam, Cambodia and also Timor Leste and Lao PDR, with special slot will be given to DIPECHO partners organization. Other interested participants need to have approval from the Training Committee.
Please submit your expression of interest with detail profile to Ewie: silviaa@adpc.net before 5th April 2008, with subject: CBDRR On-line Course
Should you need further information, please feel free to contact me
“This CBDRR on-line course is created and maintained by ADPC under the Partnerships for Disaster Reduction Southeast Asia (PDRSEA) project on behalf of DIPECHO-UNESCAP-ADPC. PDRSEA is a multi-phased project being implemented in Southeast Asian countries since 2001. In its fourth phase, PDRSEA aims to enhance the institutionalization of CBDRM into socio-economic development process through strengthening of national and local capacity for the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) in order to build up community resilience. The project activities involve strengthening and institutionalizing CBDRM through local-level pilot activities, facilitating information dissemination through existing local regional and national disaster risk management networks, enhancing ownership of CBDRM programs by developing the capacities of local authorities and promoting CBDRM through Disaster Management Practitioners Forum”
